Every day, our local factories in Lisbon and Porto produce thousands of loaves of bread and cakes for our 64 stores. And every day, a portion of these products goes unsold – what we call breakage. Fortunately, it is also possible to break the breakage, every day.
In addition to circular economy initiatives, where coffee grounds, orange and apple peels, and artisanal bread surpluses are transformed into new products, at A Padaria Portuguesa, combating food waste is also achieved through solidarity. Since 2010, when we opened our first store, we have been donating our daily food surpluses to various charitable institutions, with Refood being our biggest partner in this important fight.
Every day, just before closing time, Refood volunteers visit our stores to collect bakery products, pastries, snacks, and more, which are then delivered to the various families supported by the institution. Thanks to the support of all our partner institutions, we manage to donate several tonnes of food every month. With a simple gesture, we are not only preserving the environment but also contributing to a more caring world.
And because solidarity is a priority throughout the year, this Christmas we have baked some cookies that taste good and do good. With two flavours – ginger/cinnamon and cocoa – these cookies come in a very special tin for two reasons. First, because it plays music. Second, because with each purchase, €1 of its price goes to support food waste reduction initiatives. Even the cookies will taste better!
